AIM Project Releases Practical Guidelines to Support AI Adoption in European MSMEs

PR7

Co-financed by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission, the AIM Project releases its Adoption and Implementation Guide, providing practical guidance for VET providers, trainers, instructors and MSME support organisations supporting businesses in developing and applying AI skills.

As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly accessible to smaller businesses, the challenge is no longer simply understanding what AI can do. For many micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), the real challenge is identifying where AI can create meaningful value, developing the necessary skills and translating learning into practical changes in everyday work.

To address this challenge, the AIM Project (Artificial Intelligence for MSMEs) has developed the AIM Adoption and Implementation Guide – Guidelines for Practitioners, one of the key outputs of Work Package 5.

The Guide builds on the experience accumulated throughout AIM, connecting the project’s research, training resources, digital tools and practical testing activities. Its purpose is not to provide another theoretical introduction to Artificial Intelligence, but to help those working directly with MSMEs design learning and support processes that can lead from initial awareness to concrete application.

A central lesson emerging from AIM is that effective AI training for MSMEs does not need to start with complex technologies or extensive transformation programmes. Instead, it should begin with real operational needs and recognisable workplace challenges, allowing businesses and employees to understand immediately why a particular AI application may be useful.

The Guide therefore promotes a practical and gradual approach based on several principles:

  • Start from real workplace needs, rather than from technology itself.
  • Combine short and understandable theoretical inputs with practical experimentation.
  • Use concrete examples, real-life use cases and small-scale applications to make AI tangible.
  • Actively involve employees who will ultimately use AI-supported processes and tools.
  • Integrate responsible AI use, data protection, information security and human oversight from the beginning.
  • Encourage follow-up, reflection and continued learning so that training can translate into sustainable organisational change.

These principles reflect the important role played by VET providers, trainers and MSME support organisations as intermediaries between technological innovation and business practice. Rather than simply transferring technical knowledge, these actors can help businesses understand AI, identify meaningful applications, create safe opportunities for experimentation and transfer learning into everyday operations.

The AIM approach also places particular emphasis on what happens after training. Successful learning is not measured simply by the number of AI functions or tools presented. More meaningful indicators are whether participants can independently identify a relevant use case, select and test an appropriate tool, critically assess its outputs and decide on the next practical step for their organisation.

In this sense, the Adoption and Implementation Guide represents a bridge from knowledge to action. Its approach can be adapted to different sectors, company sizes and national VET contexts, supporting the transfer and continued use of AIM results beyond the project itself.

Together with AIM’s multilingual training curriculum, Digital Repository and Digital Warehouse, the Guide contributes to the project’s broader objective of making Artificial Intelligence accessible, responsible and practically useful for Europe’s MSME ecosystem.
